Wellness Exams Q & A
What does a wellness exam include?
A wellness exam includes a whole body health check. It typically includes a check of all of the following:
- Vital signs
- Blood pressure
- Heart rate
- Body temperature
- Heart function
- Lung function
- Throat, mouth, and tonsils
- Hearing and ear health
- Vision
- Lymph nodes
- Reflexes
- Balance
Even if you’re in good health, it’s a good idea to schedule a wellness exam with Dr. Stephenson once a year.
Why do I need annual wellness exams?
First, wellness exams allow Dr. Stephenson to compare your previous exam results with your current state of health. This can reveal whether there are any changes of concern. For example, if your blood pressure is significantly higher than it was at your last annual exam, Dr. Stephenson will take a close look at overall health to see if there are other possible indicators of illnesses like diabetes or heart disease. This can allow for early diagnosis and treatment.
Another reason that annual wellness exams are so important is that they're a time to get preventive care recommendations. If Dr. Stephenson observes early warning signs of chronic illnesses, for example, if you're pre-diabetic, he can start you on a preventive care plan that may help you avoid illness.
Many patients also need to have annual wellness exams to fulfill requirements from their employer or from their insurance provider. Even if no one requires you to have an annual wellness exam, it's a great thing to do for yourself and your long-term health.
Is any special preparation needed for a wellness exam?
You may need to fast for up to eight hours before your wellness exam. This allows for accurate blood test results. Prior to your exam, Dr. Stephenson will let you know about any special preparation that's required. If you've seen any other doctors or received urgent medical care elsewhere in the last year, please request that those records be sent to Dr. Stephenson prior to your appointment.
